Happy local democracy day, if you are participating in it this year. There are 2,660 council seats up for grabs in England, as well as several metro mayoralties and one by-election.
On a local level, the results of council elections can be of great significance to individual universities. Who does not know a vice-chancellor who has had their building plans stymied by council objections, or witnessed a ‘town and gown’ standoff that can only be resolved when an authority changes hands?
