As we enter week two of electioneering, will announcements on universities make much difference?

With parliament dissolved, chillaxing civil servants are coming to terms with the idea that in five weeks’ time they will probably have new ministers running departments in Whitehall. After 14 years of Conservative rule, it will be quite the change.

Weekend polling suggests that prime minister Rishi Sunak’s early policy blitz has done nothing to shift the dial, with the Labour Party still enjoying a sizeable lead. In fact, it would seem the biggest threat to Labour forming the next government is the Labour Party itself, with internal machinations proving to be a greater barrier to success than their Conservative opponents.
