Watchers of last night’s tetchy TV debate between prime minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer had to wait until the last 10 minutes of the programme, but eventually it came—a mention of universities.

It followed a question from Miles from Ilford about what future the two leaders could offer his generation.
