Geographical disparities in student applications are growing in the UK, despite a steady drop in entry requirements.
According to the third of four UCAS End of Cycle reports, the number of people who applied to at least one provider in Wales in 2018 (71,455) represented a drop of 6.3 per cent on last year. It was the second year in a row that applications to Welsh institutions fell, with a 6.2 per cent drop recorded for 2016-17.
Northern Ireland experienced a fall of 2.5 per cent to 24,015, while England saw a fall of 0.6 per cent, with 615,555 people applying to at least one English institution. Scotland bucked the trend with a slight increase of 0.2 per cent to 126,930 people who applied to at least one provider.
