International demand holds up as Brexit deadline approaches

The number of international students applying to UK universities, including students from the European Union, has risen despite the uncertainty caused by Brexit.

Figures published today by UCAS reveal that applications from non-EU international students to UK institutions grew by 9 per cent in 2019, reaching 63,695 by the application deadline on 15 January.

Applications from students in China increased by a third, rising from 11,915 in 2018 to 15,880 in 2019. This brings Chinese applicant levels close to application numbers from Wales (18,855) and Northern Ireland (17,910). The 33.3 per cent increase follows a 20.6 per cent rise in 2018.
