Politicians need to know why universities matter

University leaders must explain how much their institutions contribute to public life to whoever wins the general election.

Theresa May has said that this general election will be the most important for the country in her lifetime. It is certainly the oddest, falling a mere two years after the unexpected Conservative majority in 2015, and only one year on from the EU referendum that was, perhaps, the cost of victory.

It is also a general election in which, for all the parties, the importance of properly funding higher education is not as pre-eminent as it was in 2005, 2010 or 2015. That should concern everyone working in universities.
