To understand the principles and ethos of the University of Portsmouth, you need to look to its past as a polytechnic, says vice-chancellor Graham Galbraith. 

“It amuses me when people say they want to turn post-1992 institutions into polytechnics, as we actually have the same principles and backbone as before,” he says. “It’s just that as universities, we’ve been able to expand what we do and what we offer.”
