With senior staff suspensions, widespread redundancies and a squeeze on budgets, what is going on in Welsh universities? Fiona McIntyre finds out.
Welsh higher education is having a tough time. Swansea University has racked up the column inches over its suspension of five academics, including vice-chancellor Richard Davies and dean of the school of management Marc Clement.
Although Swansea has not officially confirmed the reason for the suspensions, Davies has claimed the university has made an allegation of gross misconduct against him, referencing the Delta Lakes (Llanelli Wellness Village) City Deal project, a development led by Carmarthenshire County Council. The university said the suspensions were made following a through and wide-reaching internal investigation.
