South African researcher bags biomedical award

A South African has bagged one of 13 prestigious international grants for biomedical research from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a US-based charity.

Valerie Mizrahi, director of the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine at the University of Cape Town, will receive a five-year grant of US$500,000. She will use the funds to conduct research on tuberculosis and mentor early-career scientists.
