Homegrown funding essential for knowledge ownership

Having more local research funding in Africa would help cement local ownership of health research and its development outcomes, a senior Wellcome Trust official said last week.

Chris Bird, a lawyer at the trust, told a meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, that Africa’s dependence on international research funding has led to a lack of in-country collaboration and ownership.
