How to win from Gates: Be precise

Simplicity is key in winning a research grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This is a lesson that Jasper Ogwal-Okeng, a Ugandan health researcher, learnt too well when his first application for a Grand Challenges Exploration (GEC) grant didn’t succeed.

In hindsight, he knew his proposal had lacked clarity and was too scientific. “We were not very focused,” he says.
