Foreign investment bankrolls African R&D

African governments’ low spend on research and development is well documented. But the extent to which foreign investment pays for African R&D is less so—until now.

The World Investment Report for 2012, published on 6 July by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), has analysed the extent to which foreign direct investment (FDI) accounts for official R&D expenditure in different regions.
