German science minister quits after Africa tour

German research minister Annette Schavan resigned from her post on the return from a visit to South Africa this month after examiners found evidence of plagiarism in her PhD thesis.

Schavan’s visit last week was part of the German-South African Year of Science 2012-13. She said she wanted to boost cooperation between the countries in astronomy, climate change and urbanisation, the bioeconomy and health industry, as well as humanities and social sciences.
