Kenyan researcher gets a head start

It’s skill not age that matters, says socks-in-a-box inventor

Fredros Okumu, a Kenyan entomologist, is only 31 but has achievements that some of his peers can only dream of.

The success story of Okumu, a researcher at the Tanzania-based Ifakara Health Institute, began when he won his first grant in 2009 at the age of 28, a US$100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) award from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
