A pan-African think tank researching democracy and governance is closing down after 27 years, having failed to raise sufficient funds to keep its operations going.
The North Gauteng High Court will hear an application for provisional liquidation of the South Africa-based Institute for Democracy in Africa (IDASA) on 2 April.
Ivor Jenkins, IDASA’s managing director, says the think tank filed for liquidation because it is unable to pay off a US$2.5 million debt it owes the South African Revenue Service in unpaid taxes. It also has bank overdrafts.
