A €28 million (US$35m) laboratory that will conduct research on bee populations and health was opened in Kenya on 3 November.
The Kenya-based International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology opened the African Reference Laboratory for Bee Health as part of a three-year project, which it is implementing with the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR).
Suresh Raina, team leader of the ICIPE’s commercial insects programme, says the project will audit bee biodiversity in Africa, looking for undiscovered bees that might be better pollinators or more resistant to diseases.
