Ethiopia’s universities urged to focus on quality

Ethiopia’s universities were urged to foster quality teaching and learning to meet labour market needs at the country’s sixth national conference on higher education.

Jeilu Omer, academic vice president at Addis Ababa University, told the meeting in Adama, central Ethiopia, on 5 to 7 June that the country’s university sector  was expanding rapidly. Growth was particularly felt in the number of students, which means there are additional pressures on universities maintaining their standards, he said.

Omer said that focusing on the quality and relevance of higher education would enable the country to produce manpower for its industries.
