The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences plans to open a climate sciences institute at its Kigali headquarters in 2018. The institute will conduct research on climate science and train PhD students from across the continent.
The centre will require about US$1 million annually to operate. The Rwandan newspaper Kigali Times reported that the government has already pledged to meet half of the centre’s annual budget.
“We have placed a lot of importance [on] the AIMS programme, and we have already agreed to contribute to this budget,” the paper quoted Samuel Mulindwa, Rwanda’s Education secretary, as saying.
