Makerere University in Uganda spent USh386 million (US$107,000) in wrongful payments to 14 retired employees who remained on the institution’s payroll long after leaving it, according to a 2015-16 audit.
The university also failed to account for USh882m advanced to staff and colleges, and USh1.1 billion worth of tuition fees, the national auditor general says in a report.
The story has been reported widely by Uganda media after being broken by the Xpress Times. None of the articles say whether any action has been taken against the institution over the findings, or how the losses have affected operations like research and teaching.
