Germany-based chemical company Bayer AG is committing €55,000 (US$62,000) over the next two years to fund a pollinators research project in eastern Kenya.
The firm, which also produces some of the pesticides ecologists say are killing pollinators worldwide, is partnering with Museums of Kenya on the project to study the role of insects in vegetable and legumes production.
The project was launched in Nairobi on 3 June. It will be led by Esther Kioko, a scientist with the Museums of Kenya organisation. Two masters students will be supported to complete their studies through the project.
