Kenya’s new education czar a returning professor from US

Mwenda Ntarangwi, a professor of anthropology at Calvin College in Michigan in the United States, will return to his homeland, Kenya, to lead the country’s Commission for University Education.

Ntarangwi beat six Kenya-based candidates to the post—among them acting CUE chief Water Owaya, CUE quality audit and standards deputy head Anne Nangulu, former Egerton University head James Tuitowek, and three deputy vice-chancellors.

The Daily Nation reported that education minister Fred Matiang’i made the appointment in a letter dated 17 July, following interviews conducted in June by the CUE management board.
