Construction has begun on a US$1.6 million biosecurity laboratory in Uganda. The New Vision newspaper reported that work was inaugurated on 13 May.

It is funded by the United States Department of Defense and will be housed at the National Livestock Resources Research Institute. The lab will have genetics, serology and microbiology units.

Construction is due for completion by February 2019. According to Justus Rutaisire, corporate services director at the National Agricultural Research Organisation, the lab will enhance biosafety and biosecurity in Uganda through detection, diagnosis and surveillance of diseases.
