Makerere wins Gates money for cassava research

Uganda’s Makerere University has received US$565,000 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support a cassava breeding project.

The grant, to the Makerere Regional Centre for Crop Improvement, is a partnership with Cornell University in the United States.

Some of the money will go towards improvement of cassava and sorghum, two drought-tolerant crops that are critical to food security in the country.
