Humanitarian grand challenges names winners and adds funds

The government aid organisations of the United States and the United Kingdom have announced the winners of their first Humanitarian Grand Challenges programme call, with half the projects focussing on Africa.

The 23 winning projects were announced by the United States Agency for International Development administrator, Mark Green, on 25 September in New York. Twelve of the projects focus on at least one African country, mostly on South Sudan.

The programme issued its first call for applications in February. USAID and the UK Department for International Development committed a combined £11 million (US$14.3m) to the programme.
