Two projects that will study nutrient-rich ocean upwellings in the East Atlantic have been funded by the German ministry of education and research, BMBF.

Three projects will share €8.7 million (US$10m) over three years, looking at upwellings off the coasts of South America and Africa.

Coastal upwellings are among the biologically most productive marine events worldwide, BMBF said in a statement. But, it says, it is not clear whether they can maintain this function if the oceans warm and lose oxygen as a result of climate change.
