US funders name first batch of African science leaders

The first winners of a programme that will take promising African health researchers to the United States for training have been announced.

The 10 winners announced on 24 January hail from six African countries: three each from Ghana and Nigeria, and one each from Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya and Mali.

The African Postdoctoral Training Initiative is supported by US$4 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. The African Academy of Sciences was responsible for selecting the candidates.
