Sierra Leone scientist remembered for gender activism

A brilliant scientist who fought for the recognition of women in science—this is how Joseph Massaquoi, who died on 25 May, will be remembered by many of his peers.

Sierra Leone-born Massaquoi’s achievements included lobbying the L’Oreal to partner with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization  to set up the UNESCO/L’Oreal Fellowships Award For Women in Science in sub-Saharan Africa.

He was also instrumental in lobbying for the African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions, an organisation that he coordinated for 18 years, to manage the award. He is credited with turning ANSTI into a vibrant organisation with a strong membership and funding.
