Report warns of tough times ahead for academies

An initiative that funded five African science academies says three of them will struggle to sustain themselves if they don't find other donors when it ends in 2015.

The three are the Cameroon Academy of Sciences, the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences and the Ugandan National Academy of Sciences (UNAS).

The report, ‘Enhancing the Capacity of African Science Academies’, was compiled after the evaluation of the African Science Academy Development Initiative. It said that funding constraints have incapacitated the three academies from increasing their staff and owning equipment and offices.
