Thomas Kariuki, a Kenyan biomedical scientist, has been appointed director of the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa, it was announced on 30 March.
The Nairobi-based AESA will be launched in June, having been created by the African Academy of Sciences and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development Planning and Coordinating Agency, with seed funding from three international donors.
It is envisaged that the facility will function as a science funding and agenda-setting platform. Its establishment was approved by African leaders at an African Union summit in Addis Ababa in January.
