Botswana chemist named African academy head

Nelson Torto, an analytical chemist from Botswana, has been appointed executive director of the African Academy of Sciences.

The AAS announced the appointment on 15 August.

Torto is the first permanent head of the AAS since the departure of Berhanu Abegaz. Tom Kariuki, the director of the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa, has been acting head since March.
