Women-only agri-programme extends to Francophonie

A programme dedicated to supporting women in agricultural research in Africa has extended its reach to the continent’s Francophone countries.

Wanjiru Kamau-Rutenberg, the director of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development programme, announced the extension on 5 September in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funds the award scheme, which was launched in 2007. Initially the programme targeted Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Liberia was added in 2011. The Gates Foundation and the US Agency for International Development extended the funding by US$19 million in 2012.
