African index launched to fight foodborne disease

An index has been established to measure the threat posed to Africa by foodborne illnesses.

The African Food Safety Index was launched in Dakar, Senegal, on 2 October.

The goal of the index is to create information to help African governments increase food safety, reduce disease and improve food trade. The World Health Organization puts deaths in Africa from foodborne diseases at 137,000 a year.
