Establish local journals, African researchers urged

Africa’s research community needs to establish its own reputable journals to respond to local research needs, a prominent Kenyan academic has said.

Lucy Irungu, vice-chancellor of the South Eastern Kenya University and president of the Eastern African Research and Innovation Management Association, made the comments on 23 October at the Sixth African Higher Education Week in Nairobi.

She said such journals would ensure that African academics do not keep trying to publish in international journals that are unresponsive to local development realities and needs.
