Pneumonia R&D overlooks low-income countries, report says

Research funding for pneumonia is heavily out of sync with the disease burden, posing particular problems for low-income countries.

A report has found that while 80 per cent of the world’s pneumonia burden fall on low-income countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, only 8.4 per cent of pneumonia research investment focus on these low-income countries.

The report, released on 19 April, was compiled by a team of researchers from the United Kingdom and the United States lead by the University of Southampton’s Rebecca Brown and Michael Head.
