China will offer scholarships to thousands of Africans over the next three years, its president said at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing on 3 September.
Xi Jinping said that capacity building will be one of China’s eight “major initiatives” with Africa as part of the latest FOCAC agreement. This includes training “1,000 high-calibre Africans”, 50,000 scholarships, funding for seminars and workshops for a further 50,000, and 2,000 exchanges for young Africans to visit China.
In addition, Xi promised that China will establish an African studies institute and build headquarters for the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
