South Africa’s top universities have stabilised their positions in the 2019 Times Higher Education’s Emerging Economies Rankings published on 16 January, but the charge from North Africa is intensifying.
Last year Egypt eclipsed South Africa for the first time in the rankings, which assesses universities in 43 countries classified as “emerging economies” according to the FTSE (Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index) classification.
Egypt had nine universities on the 2018 list, while South Africa had eight. This year Egypt adds 10 universities, making a total of 19. This places it seventh in the rankings in terms of the number of universities included.
