Germany backs health research in East Africa
The German government has announced funding to support health research in East Africa. The money is part of US$128 million research funding announced on 5 December. The bulk of the funds will be used for immunisation efforts by the East African Community. But US$15.5m will be awarded to the University of Kigali in Rwanda for the EAC Regional Centre of Excellence for Health Supply Chain Management. US$2.2m will support reference laboratories for communicable diseases in the region, while an additional US$5.3m goes to the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in Arusha, Tanzania, for its Academic Centre for Digital Innovation in East Africa.
