Health research training programme renamed to honour Mayosi

South Africa’s government has renamed a health research training programme in honour of Bongani Mayosi. The country’s ministers of higher education and training and health, Naledi Pandor and Aaron Motsoaledi, announced the decision on 30 April in Johannesburg. The National Health Scholars Programme, which Mayosi chaired, will carry his name from now on. The programme supports the training of health scientists, and has produced almost 50 graduates, the majority doctorates. Mayosi’s suicide in August 2018 shocked South Africa’s science community and ignited debate about mental health and trauma among researchers in the wake of the Fees Must Fall protests.
