South Africa’s DST becomes DSI

It’s all change at the South African government department responsible for science. Not only was the Department of Science and Technology merged with the Department of Higher Education and Training under one minister a month ago—but the DST itself (it remains a department within the new Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology) is being rebranded as the Department of Science and Innovation. The rebranding will take time, not least for people who use the name a lot. At this week’s budget debate, science, technology and higher education minister Blade Nzimande and all other speakers continued to refer to the DSI as the Department of Science and Technology. Only his deputy, Buti Manamela, referred to it by its new name.
