Delayed SA-produced ventilators ready ‘in a few weeks’
South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry says the first 2,000 ventilators produced by a national project will be ready “in a few weeks’ time”. The project, announced in April and headed by the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory, had aimed to produce 10,000 ventilators by the end of June to help the country’s Covid-19 response. That total will now be delivered only in stages “over the next two months”, the DTI said. Each ventilator costs R12,500 (US$760), which the DTI says is cheaper than commercial alternatives. Funding for the project comes from the Solidarity Fund, South Africa’s pandemic response fund.
