A science strategy, an ailing student scheme, a war, a telescope and some fresh faces

The coming year promises to be a big one for Africa.

South Africa will hold its seventh general election since it embraced democracy, likely to be its most hotly contested to date. The African Union is set to review and update its 10-year science policy. And South Africa’s first Square Kilometre Array dishes will be assembled in the Karoo desert, kick-starting a multi-year construction phase for the giant radio astronomy telescope.
