SKA inspires South Africa’s first big data centre

A research centre that will collect and analyse data from the Square Kilometre Array, the world’s largest radio telescope, will be opened in South Africa next month.

The Inter-university Centre for Data Intensive Astrophysics is part of a partnership between the University of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape.

It will also offer masters and PhD courses in computer sciences and bioinformatics, says Russ Taylor, the UCT/UWC research chairman for radio astronomy.
