Increasing research output is a challenge for South African universities that were transformed from technikons after the end of the apartheid regime, according to Nduduzo Madlala, a research officer at the Durban University of Technology.
The university was formed in 2002 from a merger of Technikon Natal and ML Sultan Technikon.
