South Africa’s R&D spend unchanged

South Africa's spend on research and development stagnated at 0.76 per cent of its gross domestic product for the third consecutive year, according to the results of the country’s 2012/13 R&D survey, announced on 3 December.

The Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Indicators of the Human Sciences Research Council publishes the survey, which is the third to be released within a year.

National spending increased by a nominal 7.5 per cent in 2012/2013 to R23.87 billion (US$2bn) but the figure amounts to 2.5 per cent growth when adjusted for inflation.
