Epidemiology couple set up visiting lectureship

Two South African epidemiologists have joined forces with the country’s Medical Research Council to fund visiting lectureships to bring international experts in paediatrics and public health to South Africa.

Salim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim, funders of the Durban-based Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa, announced on 14 April that they were sponsoring half of the R2 million (US$166,000) lectureships.

Their money comes from scientific prizes the husband-and-wife team have collected in the last half-year. In October, Quarraisha Abdool Karim was awarded the US$100,000 TWAS-Lenovo prize for scientific excellence. In January her husband received the Kwame Nkrumah African Union award, worth the same amount.
