SA looks to fuel cells to shore up minerals industry

South Africa’s trade and industry minister Rob Davies has launched a study to identify fuel cell components that can be manufactured locally.

The R15 million (US$950,000) study intends to help create a local fuel cell industry and create fresh demand for the country’s precious minerals, especially platinum.

“We are in a difficult time as producers and exporters of primary mineral resources as a result of the significant price fall of commodities,” Davies said at the 10 February launch.
