A forum has been launched to enable oceanographers in South Africa to piggyback on research undertaken by the country’s growing offshore oil and gas industry.
The South African Marine Research and Exploration Forum was launched at Cape Town’s Two Oceans Aquarium on 29 January. The forum will link academic researchers with counterparts in industry to allow them to share data and research ideas.
Marine resources, including offshore oil and gas, have the potential to add R20 billion (US$2.1bn) to national GDP over the next five years, South African science minister Naledi Pandor said at the launch.
