Complete MeerKAT to be ready for use in April 2018

The full 64-dish complement of the MeerKAT radio telescope, a precursor of the Square Kilometre Array, will be ready for use by scientists in April 2018, officials have said.

Rob Adam, managing director of SKA South Africa, said that construction will be completed by March 2018 and that the telescope will be operational the following month.

This is later than estimates given about a year ago, which set the date for completion for the end of 2017. Half the dishes were announced as operational in March this year.
