South African tech agency angles for big funding boost

South Africa's Technology and Innovation Agency hopes to double its budget over the next five years—but needs help to hit the target.

“Our minister [of science and technology, Naledi Pandor] is a big ambassador in looking to escalate TIA’s budget to R1 billion (US$76.5 million) over five years,” TIA CEO Marlow Manilal told a parliamentary committee on 14 June.

In the latest budget, TIA was scheduled to receive R444m by 2019/2020. Its 2017/2018 budget was just short of R400m.
