Graça Machel, a Southern African humanitarian, has been selected to join a UK science academy, one of only two Africans honoured this year.
Machel was elected as an honorary fellow of the British Academy on 20 July. She is one of 42 new fellows, who also include Mahmood Mamdani affiliated to Makerere University in Uganda.
She is the current chancellor of the University of Cape Town in South Africa and president of the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. She also heads a trust in her name which supports the rights of women and children, as well as nutrition and good governance in Africa.
